FAQs
What wax do we use?
We are proud to use 100% non-toxic, natural coconut and soy wax blend, which we mix in-house for use in all of our candle products. For wax melts we use European Golden Wax 464. Soy and coconut wax allow for a longer and cleaner burn in addition to being both sustainable and eco friendly.
How long should I burn my candle?
For the first time burning your candle you should allow enough time for the melted wax pool to reach the sides of the vessel. Wax forms memory from the first use so we strongly advise approximately a 3/4 hour initial burn to avoid wax from tunnelling.
What wicks do you use?
We use the Stabilo Series Wicks in all of our candles, they are made from pure cotton and brown paper threads. These wicks are non-directional, coreless and flat braided to promote maximum and consistent capillary action, while ensuring a wick trimming flame posture. After a lot of initial testing we think Stabilo wicks are amazing and understand why they are an industry favourite.
Should I trim the wick?
Yes, always! Your candle will arrive with approximately 1/4 inch wick, after each burn we strongly advise trimming to allow for a steady, even flame and to avoid burnt wick remnants falling into the hot wax. We recommend waiting until your candle has fully cooled and to use some tissue to avoid spoiling your candle vessel, wax or hands!
What are wax melt snap bars?
If you haven’t heard of wax melts, they are a thing of great joy, especially if you like a strong scent throw. All of our wax melts come in snap bar form (like a bar of chocolate) and you can use them in any oil/wax melt burner. Simply snap a piece of your wax melt bar, place in the top of your burner with a tea light underneath to heat the wax. It is the pool of wax that generates a hot throw of scent and all of our wax melts pack a punch! They are also a great way to try out our scents before committing to a larger, more expensive candle.
Do I need to look after my concrete decor?
All of our concrete products are handmade, small batch, one of a kind items, with this considered you may notice very tiny imperfections such as small air holes - We can assure you this does not impact upon the usability or safety of our product, but just to highlight our concrete is not made industrially or by a machine. Upon purchase your concrete product will have been sealed thoroughly, however, oil residue from constantly handling your candle vessel, match pot or decorative item can sometimes leave a faint residue, so we advise keeping this to a minimum.

Do you have sustainability policy?
In a world obsessed with fast fashion and single use plastics, sustainability and our impact upon the environment has been carefully considered by Dusk + Ember. Below are policies we have implemented to align ourselves with environmental best practice:
1. We only source ethical and environmentally friendly ingredients - All of our wax is natural, 100% vegan and non-toxic. We completely avoid unnatural dyes and colouring.
2. Strictly no single use products or use of plastics where possible. All of our products can be reused over again and can be fully recycled when lifespan is up. Keep up to date with our mailing list and blog posts to learn how you can reuse and up-cycle our items.
3. All shipping materials are fully recyclable and biodegradable. We encourage you to always responsibly recycle or reuse packing materials.
4. We do not adhere to current trends - We believe all of our pieces are original and timeless, fashion fads are not something we have any interest in aligning with.
